On October 21st, Joshua Bell and the Grand Theatre – National Opera Orchestra under the direction of Gabriel Chmura brought the house down with their phenomenal and passionate interpretation of Brahms. All proceeds from the concert – PLN 1,700,000 – will go to support the construction of the core exhibition at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
The concert Music for a Beautiful World is not only a major musical happening but, first and foremost, the first benefit organized on such a large scale in support of a nascent cultural institution. We owe its idea and execution to Zygmunt Rolat, our Distinguished Benefactor, a philanthropist engaged in the dialogue between Gentiles and Jews in Poland. The evening was hosted by Waldemar Dąbrowski, Director-in-Chief of the Grand Theatre – National Opera, who offered the Moniuszko Concert Hall for the occasion at no charge. The orchestra directed by Maestro Gabriel Chmura also donated its participation in the concert.
Joshua Bell, who played on the famous Stradivarius Gibson violin that once belonged to Bronisław Huberman – a violin virtuoso who saw himself as a Pole, a Jew, a free artist and a pan-European – drew multitudes of music lovers and Museum friends to the concert, also attended by highest-ranking national and municipal government officials. Music for a Better World is a model sponsorship project. Leading institutions, corporations and individual businesspeople were called on to purchase tickets or special sponsor packages. Largest multinational and Polish companies and foremost representatives of the business community responded to the call. Thanks to this special formula, all proceeds from sales of tickets and sponsor packages went to a fund set up for the purpose of financing the fit-out of the museum’s core exhibition. The support and generosity of participating corporations and individuals made it possible to collect PLN 1,700,000 from sales of sponsor packages in Poland and elsewhere in Europe, donations in the United States and direct ticket sales at the Grand Theatre box office. The entire amount will be earmarked to fitting out the Museum’s core exhibition.
“I am glad,” said Museum Director Jerzy Halbersztadt, “that thanks to the involvement of numerous corporations, foundations and private individuals across many continents the Museum will be created as a joint effort to build a better world for us all.”
With the artist’s permission, we have invited students from the State School of Music no. 1 in Warsaw to attend the dress rehearsal that preceded the concert. For 50 students and five teachers it was – as they said there and then – an “incredible experience”. For all these guests it was an unique, and at the same time free, opportunity to hear music performed masterfully on an instrument like no other. Thanks to tickets bought by B’nai B’rith, the concert was also attended by a few Righteous Among the Nations and students from Roman Lasocki’s violin class at the Academy of Music on Okólnik.
Joshua Bell’s recital Music for a Beautiful World electrified the public opinion. Its announcements appeared in almost all media: in newspapers, on radio and television, in weekly and monthly magazines and on most popular internet portals. The concert and its commendable purpose, Bronisław Huberman and Joshua Bell with his violin worth USD 4 million, were featured in the media more than 100 times. They even made the front page of Duży Format insert to Gazeta Wyborcza daily newspaper.
The Museum of the History of Polish Jews wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks for their honorary participation to:
